In case you were wondering, I’ve started laying out Sybil’s Garage No. 6. With sixteen stories and thirteen poems, it’s going to be our largest issue to date. I’ve laid out the stories and poems without art, and the document is already 98 pages long. With inserted art and call-outs and marginalia, the magazine could easily top 120 pages. Just found this review by Lawrence Conquest of my story, “Saving Diego,” in Interzone. Lawrence says (mild spoiler warning): “In Matthew Kressel’s ‘Saving Diego’ a former drug dealer travels across the galaxy to help wean his old partner off of an addictive drug that allows communication with god-like aliens. Kressel initially keeps the SF elements deceptively light, immersing the reader in characterisation as the drug-fuelled relationship between the two leads is examined. Here we go again. The health insurance industry is saying they will “phase out” charging higher premiums for sick people if everyone in America is required to get health insurance. Don’t be fooled by this “olive branch.” First, this is something that any moral individual (or company) should have done back when the practice began. Suddenly, now they have a change of heart?
