More Evils of Facebook

20 February 2009 2 Comments Posted by Matthew Kressel

We’ve all heard about the Orwellian problems with the recent Facebook terms of service and how they have since backtracked to an older version due to user discontent .  Now I’ve just read that Facebook will not delete a deceased relative’s Facebook page, even after requested.  Facebook says:

“Per our policy for deceased users, we have memorialized this person’s account. This removes certain more sensitive information and sets privacy so that only confirmed friends can see the profile or find the person in search. The Wall remains so that friends and family can leave posts in remembrance.”

For a site that generates ALL its content from its users I find this attitude more than a little disturbing.  Disgusting, actually.  Remember that on Facebook you cannot delete your account, only “deactivate” it.  This newest revelation is making me rethink my usage of the “Myspace for adults.”

I’ve got an old facebook from a previous college (old school, where you couldn’t put multiple colleges on one page) where my profile picture is of my ex boyfriend and I. Unfortunately, I forgot the password and cannot change it, nor can I change any of the other information. I contacted them about it and heard nothing. How kind. It’s petty in comparison to the disturbing refusal to delete the accounts of deceased users…but still. Ridiculous, I think.

Yeah, I think because it’s so simple, that people forget that the information is out there. I’m sorry you can’t take it down. I’m seriously thinking of taking down my profile.
